A new footbridge crossing the busy A570 and connecting St Helens town centre to the new St Helens rugby league ground has been completed this month. When viewed from above, the 54.6m slender twin arches are shaped like a rugby ball in recognition of this hotbed of Rugby league. The deck and side spans were lifted onto trestles using a 350 tonne crane and then welded together. With the deck in place, the arches were then lifted into position. The arches were delivered to site in 2 pieces and welded together to form a 42m long section weighing 28 tonnes. They were then lifted into position and connected to a V-Shaped section cast into the abutment on both sides. The final stage was to install hangers connecting the deck to the arches, allowing the load to be transferred from the trestles to the structure.
